Why is sex a private thing

Most people don't want to share sex or their nudity, Why not?

Primarily because our society has developed such a complex over modesty that it is considered by many to be shameful for people to show off their bodies (unless in an appropriate environment), or allow others to see something as intimate as sex.

At least, that's my take on things.
